After a week of chopping ice that was getting to be 6 inches thick, I decided that we had to figure out some way to keep the stock tank from freezing so fast. A water heater wasn’t an option because it uses electricity. Something solar immediately came to mind, and Nathan and I set to searching the web for ideas.
On the Build it Solar website we found exactly what we were looking for. They have a fantastic how-to article with lots of pictures. They even had a nice performance graph showing how well the tank worked.
Our solar tank was a bit different from theirs. We used our stock tank instead of just a liner.
